June brought with it the end of Johanna's time at St. Paul Lutheran Pre-school. We registered Johanna for kindergarten at our local elementary school and we decided that she would finish her 3rd year with St. Paul Lutheran at the traditional end of the school year and not enroll her for summer day care. Unlike 5th grade and 8th grade there were no events scheduled to signal the big shift that was about to take place. Oddly though there were no end of the school year events scheduled at all. No picnics or fun days of any sort.
The majority of Johanna's TK class were not returning to the primary school. This was the point in which their paths would diverge. The parents got together and planned an end of the year party at a local pool. It was a lot of fun to get together outside of the school setting. The parents all discussed where their kids were going to kindergarten and summer plans. Johanna had a good time in the pool and on the playground with her friends. She was especially thrilled with the cake.I was glad to have the event to mark the end of the pre-school stage of her education and send Hanna in a new direction with a joyous occasion.
Johanna's pre-school years were good ones. She loved the books on tape, coloring, daily calendar and weather. She liked the snacks and outside time on the playground. She liked Ms. June, the teacher and Ms. Rachel, the helper in her Transitional Kindergarten class. Johanna loved Spanish class, music and snacks. Johanna loved the bible stories and earnestly retold them. She did not like nap time. She didn't take a nap all year and instead played quietly in the dark while on her cot.
Johanna learned how to work with other kids with strong personalities. She witnessed kids occasionally having a hard time and learned compassion. She interacted with kids who needed to be in charge and she learned compromise. And she learned how to play WITH kids not just around them. Johanna grew a lot this year and is ready to move on.
