The day started normally, we all went to Rae's game and I left at half time with Meg and Bridge to go to dance and Jim stayed at the game then brought Em and Rae to Em's soccer game. At the end of Meg's class Jim called saying I needed hurry back because Em might have broken her arm. We all met at urgent care. Emma was pale and protecting her arm. I knew she was in pain as she sat shaking her leg. We all stayed for a while as Jim went with Em to be seen by the nurses. Then Jim brought the younger ones home and I stayed while Em got x-rays. It showed a broken radius. They put Em's wrist in a splint wrapped in ace bandages.
Em was exhausted and we had some things to do before the birthday party so we skipped the afternoon party. The cousin's birthday party at Will and Heather's house was a lot of fun even if I spent most of it planted on the couch as did Emma. Emma started to look pale again so we got her some more pain medication and she perked up for cake and presents. Em was supposed to babysit that night for Kelly and Alfredo's daughter Lucia, and I felt bad we had to cancel with so little notice but there was just no way. Luckily Heather offered to have Lucia stay the night with them and Kelly and Alfredo didn't have to cancel plans. It really is nice to have a big family.
Emma's injury prompted some chore rearranging for the next 6 weeks and some concern as to how she was going to hold her baby sister when she did finally make her entrance, but somehow I am confident that Emma will be sure to get lots of baby time. She was sure that the hard cast would make it easier. We were scheduled to get the cast on Tuesday. Em was up for school on Monday in her splint and made things work one-handed although everything took longer to accomplish. Of course everyone at school asked her about what happened and I guess she got bored explaining that she was goalie for her soccer game and back peddled to get in better position, fell in the wet grass and landed on her left wrist. So instead she started telling people that she was visiting her uncle's farm in Kentucky over the weekend and was helping to herd buffalo when she got knocked down and broke her wrist. I don't know where she came up with that story but lots of people believed it until she let them off.
Tuesday we went up to Towson to see the orthopedist. He was great, explained things and was fast. Em got a blue cast to match her soccer teams color. They put it on and we scheduled to come back in 4 weeks. As we walked out to the van and Em started complaining that the cast was tight and her fingers hurt. We decided to go back in. Sure enough her fingers were losing circulation so the doctor split the cast to release the pressure. The cast is still holding her bones in place but as the swelling goes down it will get looser, so now we go back in 2 weeks for a new cast. One of Em's biggest concerns was the long time in the itchy cast and is glad that she will get to wash her arm and get a new cast in half the time. I love her positive outlook. She is making the best of this and I know her attitude will help with healing.
Ah, yes, looks just like the one I had last year, except mine was red and went over my elbow.
